A Timeless Transformation in Austin
When Austin homeowner Amber Heisner first moved into her Mediterranean-style home, the upstairs was covered in white carpet. “It was brand new when we bought it,” she recalls. “We had actually never had carpet in a home before, and while many people love it upstairs because it’s soft for bedrooms and helps with noise, I never really liked it.” Amber had always assumed the carpet would eventually be replaced with hardwood — until another idea took hold.
As a mom of two teenagers and a San Antonio native, Amber had grown up surrounded by Saltillo tile in her parents’ Spanish Revival home. “Each room had a different pattern,” she says. “It gave every space its own personality while still feeling cohesive.” She wanted to bring that same sense of warmth and timeless beauty into her own home — and Rustico Tile & Stone helped her make it happen.
A Family Tradition of Timeless Design
Amber’s appreciation for Saltillo runs deep. “My parents’ home had Saltillo tile throughout,” she says. “Each room had a different pattern, which always made the spaces feel unique yet connected.” So when it came time to refresh the upstairs of her Mediterranean-style home — a design built around stunning Spanish doors — Amber wanted to bring that same warmth and authenticity to her own space.
After discovering Rustico Tile & Stone through a Google search, Amber initially thought the company had representation in the Austin area. “I was excited to see that,” she explains, “but it turned out that wasn’t the case anymore.” Instead, Shelly from Rustico’s South Texas team reached out and guided her through the process. “I’m very visual,” Amber says. “Shelly sent samples so I could see and feel the tile in person, and once I did, I knew this was the right direction.”
Designing with Intention
Working closely with Shelly, Amber explored Saltillo colorations, shapes, and patterns. “There were so many beautiful options — it was almost overwhelming,” she laughs. She was originally drawn to using 6×12 rectangular tiles in various layouts, but availability ultimately shaped the final design.
“I’m so glad it worked out the way it did,” Amber says. The Saltillo tile throughout the upstairs is a thoughtful mix of Fleur de Lis, San Felipe, and a blend of the two known as the Riviera pattern. The more decorative shapes brought movement and visual interest to each space. To subtly define rooms and transitions, 4×12 rectangular Saltillo tiles were used as border accents around the edges.
The result is layered and intentional. “Each area has its own rhythm,” Amber explains, “but everything still feels connected.”

Craftsmanship and Collaboration
As with any handmade material, Saltillo tile comes with natural variation — something Amber embraced but also planned for carefully. “We had to manage height transitions from carpet to tile, and every piece required attention,” she says.
Her contractor assembled a multigenerational installation team — a father, son, and uncle — who understood the care required for handmade tile. “They took their time aligning patterns, especially in the large den,” Amber notes. “You can really see the craftsmanship in the finished space.”
A few specialty pieces, including stair coping, were missing from the initial shipment, but Rustico’s team quickly stepped in to resolve it. One replacement tile even arrived with a small paw-print impression. “We learned it’s considered good luck,” Amber laughs. “Now it’s one of my favorite details.”
Throughout the process, Rustico team members Shelly and Martha stayed closely connected. “They were incredibly responsive and always willing to jump on the phone,” Amber says. “That level of service is rare.”
A Home That Feels Complete
Once installation was finished, the transformation felt effortless. “It looks like it’s always been here,” Amber says. “The Saltillo ties everything together — warm, inviting, and full of character.”
Friends and family noticed immediately. “They always comment on how natural it feels,” she adds. “Like the floors were meant to be part of the house from the beginning.”
Looking Ahead
With leftover Saltillo tile still on hand, Amber is already thinking ahead — this time to a future master bathroom renovation. “I hadn’t originally planned on using Saltillo in a bathroom,” she says, “but after researching Saltillo and hand-painted cement tile, I think it could work beautifully with the right sealer.”
Her advice for anyone considering Saltillo?
“See the options in person, measure twice, plan carefully, and hire experienced installers. The results are worth it!”
